Rainbow Snippets – October 27 to 28

Welcome to Rainbow Snippets!!

I am recovering from a stressful week. I hope yours was better than mine. 🙂

More from “The Hippie Whisperer” below. Carl and Ben share lunch…and conversation.

—————————————————————————————

“So I talked to Chester the Sunday after…you know,” I began.
“I figured that,” he said.
“We talked about a lot of things.”
“And,” he urged.
“While I don’t like your approach to some things, I want to thank you for what you said to my son. As for what you said to me, I have to say, it was hard to take.”
“I understand that.” He changed brushes. “Most true things are.” He added bright green paint to the wall.

Rainbow Snippets – October 20 to 21

Welcome to Rainbow Snippets!!

Hope your weekend is going well so far. 🙂

More from “The Hippie Whisperer” below. Carl takes a lunch break after his meeting and runs into…guess who! 🙂

—————————————————————————————

Instead of going to the teacher’s lounge, I went off campus. The Reader’s Den was only a ten-minute walk away, and I admitted to being curious about Ben’s work. It was hot out, but I didn’t mind it, much. I wanted to talk to the one person in my life who I knew, even after so short an acquaintance, would always give me the unvarnished truth, no matter how painful.

Ben sat on an old wooden bench near the wall he was painting. He was halfway through a sandwich. The first thing I noticed, of course, was his hair, but he seemed almost…tame with his paint spattered T-shirt and frayed jeans. A knotted gray handkerchief graced his neck. It all suited him, somehow, the paint brushes, rollers, paint cans. He was in his element.

Rainbow Snippets – October 13 to 14

Welcome to Rainbow Snippets!!

Yes, I’m back. 😉 I didn’t want to leave Europe, but you know? Money runs out. We had a great time, and look forward to going back at some point in the future. I hope everyone has been well and enjoying the wonderful excerpts from some really great authors!

Here is a picture of Kitzingen, Germany – lovely, yes?

Image may contain: sky, outdoor and water

More from “The Hippie Whisperer” below. Carl is at work, talking to a prospective student and has a tiny epiphany. 🙂

—————————————————————————————

I leaned back in my chair and looked at the man sitting in front of me.

He was my age and slightly overweight, with a bald spot and his remaining hair pulled back into a stringy ponytail. Henry Farthing wore a short-sleeved shirt with palm trees all over it, Dockers and sneakers.

But for the grace of God, there go I. Tell me this isn’t what I look like in public.

“Why the sudden interest in going back to school?”

“Well, my wife died, and while I loved being on the road, it’s not fun without her anymore. I thought it was time for a change. You’re never too old to try something new, I’ve found.”

Okay, universe, I hear you. Stop poking me.

Anywho, I hope you enjoy the snippets below, and I will get back to you all in October. Thank you for indulging me. 🙂

Continuing with “The Hippie Whisperer“, Carl does some soul-searching, and Chester comes clean.

—————————————————————————————

Snippet 9/8 to 9/9

It was only eight o’clock in the evening, but I was suddenly tired. I put away the unopened beer and emptied the rest of mine down the sink. After turning off all the lights downstairs, I headed up to my room to get ready for bed. I would probably work on the unfinished crossword puzzle on the bedside table, or read something. I didn’t know. I was out of sorts.

The past twenty-four hours had been a bit of a mind fuck. My friends and my own kid had more going on in their lives than I did. And the reality of their happiness floored me. I brushed my teeth and washed up a little at the sink. Before I turned off the light, I took a long hard look at myself in the mirror.

———————————————————————————

Snippet 9/15 to 9/16

I’d never given two ticks about the way I looked, or whether or not I had too many wrinkles. People could take me as I was, that’s how I saw it. Now, I took it all in. And if I was truthful, maybe I did need a haircut. Hell, it would be so much easier to get ready in the morning with less hair, and I was losing it, anyway. It just irked me that someone ten years my junior had to jolt me into realizing it. Truthfully, though, Ben’s self-awareness and calm in the face of my anger had me feeling like the young one, floundering for purchase.

But, so what if I cut my hair? What would that change? I’d still have the same question as before. What do I do now that Chester had a life of his own?

———————————————————————————

Snippet 9/22 to 9/23

I heard the front door open while I sat on the couch on Sunday afternoon, watching vintage Star Trek. Captain Kirk was about to figure out the trouble with tribbles, but I was no closer to figuring myself out than I was the night before.

Chester came in and sat next to me on the couch. “Hey, Dad.”

“Chester.” I kept my eyes on the show. I hadn’t forgiven him yet for last night’s stunt.

“Look, Dad, I spoke to Ben last night and—”

“Oh, I can’t wait to hear this.” I muted the television and gave Chester my full attention.

———————————————————————————

Snippet 9/29 to 9/30

“I was going to apologize, anyway,” he started to say.

“Big of you,” I interrupted.

“But Ben really lit into me and Dre about what we did, and… We had no—I had no idea it would make you feel bad or embarrass you like that. I guess we just didn’t think, and I’m so, so sorry.”

I stared at him for a minute while he squirmed like he used to when he was six years old and waiting for punishment.

“Why’d you do it, Chester?”

“Dad, I love you, but it’s like you can’t let go. And I feel guilty about being with Dre and being happy while you’re…stagnating. I was trying, in an inept way, yes, to show you that I want you to have a life of your own, and I’m okay with that. You need to do this. I can’t be your life anymore. It’s not fair to me or yourself. You have so much to offer if you’d just give yourself a chance.”

———————————————————————————

Snippet 10/6 to 10/7

“Is that how you see me? Have I been smothering you?” God, I was using my son as a crutch to cover my own cowardice.

“I wouldn’t say smothering, but I can hear the fear in your voice, the desperation when we talk on the phone. Dad, you’re not losing me. We’re just changing the nature of our relationship. I’ve started my journey into something new, and I want you to do the same, too. Please? For me?” The tears in those baby blue eyes that used to beg me for candy at the grocery store were working their magic once again.

I pulled him into my arms, squeezed him tight, then let go. Wiping away the tears on my own face I simply said, “I’ll try, son. I’ll try.”

“That’s all I can ask.”

We settled in beside each other and I un-muted the TV to watch the rest of the Star Trek episode. My thoughts wandered, though. How the hell I was supposed to start this journey, I hadn’t a clue.

Rainbow Snippets – September 1 to 2

Welcome back to Rainbow Snippets. 😀 😀

Continuing with “The Hippie Whisperer“, things are coming to a head with Carl and Ben. A little bit longer for context, and since it’s Labor Day weekend! Enjoy. 🙂

—————————————————————————————

“From your interactions with Chester, I can tell, even after such a short time, how much you live for him, do everything for him. When was the last time you did something for yourself?” Ben asked.

“I don’t understand.”

“Don’t you? Isn’t the real reason why you haven’t, say, changed your hair, or your Hawaiian shirts because you’re afraid to admit that things have changed? That your son doesn’t need you anymore, that you have to face a whole new world and fill the void, and you don’t know how to do that?” Ben hit too close to home this time.

“Okay, this is the last time I’ll take this kind of stuff from you. This is my goddamn house. How dare you come in here and claim to know me. Who the fuck do you think you are?”

“I’m the guy who’s trying to tell you it’s time to move on. Tonight, your son was trying to tell you the same thing. He feels it, too. Have you thought that you may be making him feel guilty because he knows he’s all you have?”

I got up and stalked to the front door, flinging it wide open.

“Get out.”

Ben got up and walked toward me, his confident stride only stopping when he was up close and personal, mere inches away from my face. Despite my ire, I found his eyes beautiful and mesmerizing. How could he be so calm while I was seething?

“Just think about what I’ve said, okay? Come see me when you’re ready to talk. I’m working on the wall near that
independent bookstore over on Wisteria Avenue, The Reader’s Den. I like you, Carl. I just want you to like you, too.”

He leaned in to kiss my cheek, then left.

Rainbow Snippets – August 25 to 26

Welcome back to Rainbow Snippets. 😀 😀

Continuing with “The Hippie Whisperer“, Carl and Ben are having a beer after dinner. Longer for context.

—————————————————————————————

I (Carl) said, “Not to be forward, though our exchanges up to this point have been just that. How old are you?”

“I’ll be thirty-seven on the third of July,” Ben replied.

Wow, I definitely saw him as much younger than that. “Well, you don’t look it,” I grudgingly admitted.

“Thanks, I think. You’re about forty-nine, right?”

“Forty-seven.” We were doing so well.

“Touchy.”

“It’s been a difficult twenty-four hours.”

“Look, I know I can be a bit much to take all at once, with the clothes and plain-speaking. I tend to plough ahead, no matter the consequences. I won’t apologize for that, because it’s who I am, like it or not. But I have a question for you. Tell me the truth.” His eyes bored into me. “How long has it been since you did something just for you?”

Rainbow Snippets – August 18 to 19

Morning, all! Welcome to Rainbow Snippets. 😀 😀

Continuing with “The Hippie Whisperer“, Ben’s “even white teeth” are distracting.” Longer for context.

—————————————————————————————

“I suppose you’re mostly nondescript when you’re working?” I gathered up the rest of the plates while Chester and Dre put away the leftovers.

“More or less. What about you? What do you do?”

“Well, nothing as glamorous as you. I’m a counselor at a community college.”

“I see. And you ask me what right I have to force people to—”

“Wait a minute! I don’t force anyone to do anything. I simply provide guidance and support for students in order to meet their goals.”

“But it’s according to what you think they should do, what you think is best for them, right?”

“Well, yes. That’s what I’m trained for.”

“Using art as a way to enlighten an audience, enhance human experience and thought, no matter how uncomfortable—that’s what I’m trained for.”

“Okay, okay. I get it.” One thing about Ben, you were never in doubt as to his true feelings on a subject. “Can we cry truce?” I asked.

“But we were just getting started,” Ben said with a cheeky smile.

Oh dear, the patriotic punk had even, white teeth. The universe had it in for me, surely.

Rainbow Snippets – August 11 to 12

Welcome to Rainbow Snippets weekend!

I thought I’d share the new cover of my upcoming short story, “For the Love of Muscles” – smokin’, right? 🙂

Continuing with “The Hippie Whisperer“, Ben is still shattering Carl’s concept of reality. 🙂 A little longer than six sentences for context. Mea culpa.

—————————————————————————————

Ben said, “I don’t always dress like this. My hair, so you know, is part of the ‘show’ around the mural I’m working on. It’ll be done in time for the Fourth of July. At that time, my hair will go back to its usual blond.”

“So the picture online was—”

“I’m not online.” Before I could contradict him, I heard a cough. I looked over at Chester and saw him exchange a look with Dre. Guilty. Ben was a quicker study than I, however.

“Oh, now I get it. I wondered why Dre took that photo of me when I got to the house today.” Ben looked over at the mischief makers. “You guys created the account right after that, didn’t you?”

They both shrugged and smiled, neither confirming nor denying anything.

“I don’t do online dating,” Ben said, turning his attention back to me. “That is the epitome of subterfuge, in my book.”

Definitely something we could agree on. Damn it, but he intrigued me.

Rainbow Snippets – August 4 to 5

Welcome to Rainbow Snippets weekend!

Ben explains why he dresses the way he does… “The Hippie Whisperer“… A little longer than six sentences for context. Carl is in the first person.

—————————————————————————————

“To answer your question,” Ben said, “sure, I employ the shock factor, if only because I get to see people as they really are, without artifice. First impressions always count. It’s rare to get a second chance. If something jars them or resonates on some level, and manages to open their mind, my job is done. If it doesn’t, then maybe it wasn’t time yet, and they can scurry back to that little box of staid reality they live in.”

“So is everything about making a point, with you?” I asked. “Forcing people to see or experience things they may not be ready for, according to your vision? What gives you the right to do that?”

“Just so you know,” Ben said, “when I dress like this, it’s usually to help me gauge the new people in my life. Their first response tells me all I need to know. I do like bright colors, especially in my art. But I like more mundane things, too.” He grabbed his
plate and got up to take it to the sink. I got up and took mine, too, drawn to him and his ability to cut through to the heart of things like a magnet, despite myself.

“So you’re saying you have a more subtle side?” I was  skeptical, as you might imagine, since my retinas had yet to recover.

Rainbow Snippets – July 28 to 29

Welcome to Rainbow Snippets weekend!

The dinner from hell (in Carl’s opinion) continues as Carl finds out Ben is an artist… “The Hippie Whisperer“… A little longer than six sentences for context.

—————————————————————————————

“Is the shock factor a basis for your art and your attire?” I asked.

“Dad!” Chester protested, but he started this, so he’d just have to deal.

“It’s a simple question. I’m sure he can handle it, can’t you, Ben?” I wanted to find a chink in his armor, so I wasn’t the only one off balance.

Ben just smiled at me, not even fazed by my rudeness. He addressed Chester. “It’s okay. I meet people like your dad all the time.”

“Oh, this could be good,” my son chortled. Turncoat.

“I beg your pardon?” I said.

“I’m sure I was clear,” Ben replied.

“I’m sure you weren’t.”

“Let the man talk, Dad.”

“You’re not helping, Judas.”
