Saturday, again…yeah!
I’m heading out to an Earth, Wind & Fire concert in a couple of hours…it’s currently in the 90s, so I’ll be wearing a hat, at least (and dressed otherwise for heat).
Continuing from last week’s excerpt re: “Truck Me Back to Normal,” published by MLR Press. (Joey in the first person). It’s a few sentences longer than six, for context. (Forgive me.) π
—
βIβm simply trying to find a way to start again…a new normal, as it were,” I said, “since I will never be a soldier again, though
it was all I ever wanted.β The admission of that truth still hurt, even now.
Bear studied me for a few seconds, and I did my best not to fidget. βThe job is menial in the extreme, as youβll be shoveling shit,
cleaning up after horses, pigs and cows, helping with the planting and the harvest, you name it. If we need a hole dug, a fence fixed, or an extra hand in the kitchen, youβre it. Itβs back-breaking work most days, and itβs twelve hours a day, sometimes more. Think you can handle that, Mr. Choi?β
Hard, mindless work was the best medicine for me right now. βYes, sir.β
βGood. Youβre hired.β

That first sentence really got me. I’ve been there with my first job.
Yup.
I love a decisive boss. And yes, physical work can be a cure for a lot of things. Look forward to more.
Thank you! π
Mindless occupations are great when you’ve got a lot to deal with on the inside. (voice of experiences) It’s great therapy. Good luck to him!
He will need it! π
I like their attitudes. π
Me, too! π
Sometimes mindless work is the most healing. Sometimes it leaves too much room for thought. It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out.
It will, indeed! π
Emphasize only too keenly with that line about hard, mindless work.
Yup! π
Yay! Glad Bear took a chance.
Have fun boogieing at the concert π
Thank you! π The concert sold out…we were all getting our groove on, young and old. Such a great time!
Mindless work might leave his brain free to entertain something more interesting. Or at least we can hope.
We can hope! π
